Places to linger
Picton
Pretty Picton is the gateway to the South Island and the landing point for all the Cook Strait ferries. Fabulous views across the Marlborough Sounds can be enjoyed from the waterfront. Lots of water-based activities are available together with a surprisingly good selection of shops and cafes.
Wanaka
With glorious views over Lake Wanaka to Mount Aspiring Wanaka is a pleasant, quiet and unspoilt town. With plenty of walking routes of all lengths around the edge of the lake it is a great place to relax and take in the scenery. There is a great waterfront with an interesting set of Millenium paving stones and some good cafes. The famous puzzle museum is nearby which contains, it is claimed, the world's first three dimensional maze.
Queenstown
Buzzing, lively town with a vibrant activity life. Awesome views over Lake Wakatipu and The Remarkables mountains. Good shopping, plenty of cafes and restaurants. Best views of all are from the luge run (tip: buy a multi ticket for the luge, even Mums will want to go again and again). Great base from which to explore Fjordland.
Hanmer Springs
Take a detour inland to recharge your batteries with a day at the spa. Thermal pools, swimming, plenty of cafes and restaurants and fresh mountain air make for a splendid visit.
Thorndon
Wellington's lofty upmarket suburb. A road full of restaurants and cafes, easy stroll throught the botanic gardens to the cable car downtown. A short walk from the Parliament building and the prime ministers house. A good base from which to explore the city.
